The Lazy Lobster has stopped being lazy - it's opened!

We have almost been seeing a new restaurant open in the area every week recently, with one of the latest being the Lazy Lobster which has been one of the longest to be developed. Our patch of Somerset has become a field to fork pioneer in eating. This is the first sea to fork venture near us.

The Lazy Lobster is a sibling restaurant for a fabulous eatery of the same name in Chew Magna, near Bristol. For the past few years going back to pre-Covid times, we've been watching the restaurant, situated in an old NatWest bank in Castle Cary's high street being developed. It hit all sorts of problems to do with infrastructure and planning and then had staffing issues - it couldn't find anyone to employ as The Newt takes up so many of our locals.

It was taking so long that it became a standing joke that the Lazy Lobster really was being lazy in the way it was taking its time, but that's perhaps unfair as Don, its owner, likes to do things well and has been building much of the restaurant using his own plate-sized hands.

It's now finally open and its wonderfully exciting that it is here. For far too long, Cary has lacked anywhere for locals to eat in the evening on the high street apart from at The George. So far the reaction has been good though some are wary of its prices - £6.50 for bread is too much they say which is perhaps a little steep. But that shouldn't be an overall reflection. The style of the food is a sharing plates which means you can easily limit yourself to a few dishes - Martin and I have been known to pop in for a glass of wine and some oysters - or you can splash out on a good number of plates to pass around.

The fish is fresh and according to the guests we have sent there we have been getting the thumbs up. It's also a great place just to sit down and have a drink at the bar which could make it a good meeting place once it opens for lunch as well as supper.

From this end of Cary, we wish the restaurant every success.
