Friendly family home
We are a husband and wife team. Our aim is to make sure we keep everyone feeling as if they are very much at home. All our rooms are named after our children.
Martin used to exhibit at Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court every year and is known for his Gothic follies. He now helps run the house. Melanie is a journalist who has won awards for her work, and been featured in interior magazines for her design eye supporting British makers. They are both foodies.
Martin is obsessed with food programmes. Melanie makes the dishes in the house's Aga. Food is her hobby. We have four children between us and love having a sense of family around. We are also passionate about the countryside. Martin grew up in the area and knows all there is to know about the region. Melanie came to the area from London 13 years ago.
Reasons to be here
Our guests come here for a variety of reasons including holidays, events, work, to see local galleries, explore the area, visit family and more. We have people staying from all over the world. Most people enjoy feeling at home here.
We offer advice on taxi services. Alternatively Martin can drive you to a location given notice. We often pick people up from Castle Cary station. There is another mainline station at Templecombe running from Waterloo.
Martin is a font of advice on local food specialities, shops and restaurants. We also have good connections with some of the top local restaurants and pubs and can book tables. We can suggest walks, places to visit and things to do and see.
We are five minutes from Castle Cary station by car; 20 minutes on foot. Major road networks are nearby and Bristol airport is easy to get to.
Since we are foodies, we pride ourselves on providing good local produce and a great fare for breakfast. We bake our croissants fresh. We make our own granola and muesli as well as jams and marmalades. Our eggs are sensational - they come from a smallholding up the road. Martin is noted for his coffee, all made fresh on the morning
Continental breakfast is free. It includes, yoghurts, juices, smoothies, fruit salad, cereals and cooked eggs - scrambled is our speciality. We can cater for most dietary requirements. Just give us notice in advance of any intolerances.
We cook a full English breakfast on request for £7.50. We also make Eggs Benedict and pancakes on request. Please let us know your requirement on arrival.
Breakfast is in the kitchen by the Aga. A fire is lit in winter. In Summer, guests eat outside on our terrace.
Our supper menus are seasonal and cost £20 per head on a BYOB basis.
